About The Sounding Board
We take a different approach to counselling. We are listeners first and counsellors after. To us, it is important that you be given the opportunity to tell your story and relate your journey of how you came to your current situation. As such, in our sessions, you are the focus of attention, not our counselling models nor our intellect. Our stance is non-judgmental and empathetic and our recommendations are derived through a collaborative approach where you are fully engaged. You, our client, are our focus and nurturing you back to wellness is our priority.

Founder & CEO
Rohan Thompson – BSW, MSW, RSW
Hi, I am Rohan! One of the most important aspect of my practice is to allow you to tell your story and relate your journey of how you came to your current situation. As such, in my session, you are the focus of attention, not my counselling models nor my intellect. Therefore, I make every effort to create a safe and non-judgmental atmosphere where you are heard. I position myself as a learner, knowing that you are the expert in your story; empathetically journeying with you to uncover and comprehend your situation. Collaborating with you to bring about constructive social and individual change is also key during each interaction. My hope for you is that your needs are met, your potential is developed, and control over your life is restored.
I always establish a strong rapport with my clients- the type of rapport that affirms self-determination, collaboration, and fosters growth. I also encourage an atmosphere in which clients can view problems realistically, consider various solutions and their consequences and implement change-oriented strategies. Additionally, clients have an opportunity to understand themselves and others more deeply, gain awareness of previously unrecognized strengths and opportunities for growth, and resolve obstacles to change and personal development.
Being a member of a visible minority group, I am knowledgeable and sensitive to cultural and ethnic diversity issues and forms of social injustice such as discrimination and imbalances of power. My philosophy is that each human being is special, regardless of race, color, or creed. As a result, I make it my point of duty to understand different cultures, which enables me to add a cultural variant to each interaction. In addition, I focus on the situation, issue, or behaviour, not on the individual or group which has enabled me to assess, empower, implement, and maintain the self-confidence and self-esteem of my clients.
I graduated from York University in 2007 with a Master’s degree in Social Work. I also hold a Master of Divinity degree from Canada Christian College and I enjoy providing Christian-based counselling to individuals and couples who request it. I possess over (14) fourteen years of experience in effective assessment skills and sound knowledge in various counselling approaches namely Narrative, Solution-focused, Cognitive behavioural therapy, Psychodynamic, Crisis intervention, Task-centred, Anti-oppressive, and Strength-based.
Before private practice, I worked with clients and families impacted by traumatic brain injury. I also worked as an Abuse Counsellor at Family Service York Region where we journeyed with men who abused their partners. Additionally, I provided counselling services for individuals, and families through Second Chance, a non-profit organization based in Toronto and taught Communication and Fundamental Counselling Skills at Centennial College’s Department of Social Work.
Overall, my stance is non-judgmental and empathetic, and my recommendations are derived through a collaborative approach where you are fully engaged. You, my client, are my focus, and nurturing you back to wellness is my priority.

Our VISION is to see you successfully restored to living a life of hope and become an active contributor to your family and community.
How We Are Different
We are more client focus than approach focus. We strategically use a thorough multi-dimensional assessment process which is centred around active listening. We then employ an eclectic approach that is based on your unique needs.
We strongly believe that Approaches are merely tools that we use to get the job done and help you in your adversities. Our strong client focus model requires us to make you our primary focus while ensuring that you are heard, your needs are met, your potential is developed, and control over your life is restored. We make every effort to facilitate a non-judgmental atmosphere where you feel safe to share your story.
